The G32 class of gondolas was built from April 1949 to October 1950 as a throw-back to an earlier era of smaller gondolas, having an interior length of 46 feet. In addition to this initial batch of 600 cars 1500 additional cars were built as class G32A from April to June 1953, resulting in a total of 2100 cars of this size on the roster. At the Sam Rea Shops in Hollidaysburg starting in summer 1966 600 cars from classes G32 and G32A were rebuilt with Stanray corrugated sides, assigned class G32B. In late summer 1966 an additional 100 cars were rebuilt by Sam Rea Shops with vertically corrugated sides resembling ribs, assigned class G32C. Nearly all these cars lasted beyond 1968 into Penn Central.
