As the WM transitioned locomotive paint schemes it did the same with two of its non-revenue passenger fleet, the Steam Generator car and Instruction Car. These were both painted into the striking red, white and black scheme, also called the “Circus” style scheme. The Instruction Car roamed the Western Maryland Railway system as a mobile classroom training employees on various forms of safety equipment. The Steam Generator Car was a combine which had a steam generator and diesel generator added in 1957. With the loss of regular passenger service, steam boiler equipped diesels couldn’t be ensured a passenger excursion assignment, so this car supplied the heating for excursion trains. Both cars served in this scheme from 1972 into the Chessie era. The Instruction Car was repainted by 1985 into a green scheme to match the other Safety Center cars within the Chessie System. The Steam Generator Car retained its RWB WM Scheme into retirement.
Please consult pictures and diagrams for proper lettering placement on the car.
For modeling the Steam Generator car, the best available model would be to use a Bachman Spectrum combine passenger car with some detail additions and trucks modifications. For the Instruction car, its base was a passenger coach, which is manufactured as a kit by Bethlehem Car works, however a suitable substitute can be made from a Bachman Spectrum coach.
This sheet includes enough decals to decal both cars. Detailed instructions for decaling can be found in any standard set given by major manufacturers supplied with their product, such as Microscale.
